If they are outside ensure it is under cover, in a sheltered location, that is protected from the elements.
It is important to avoid exposure to moisture, excessive heat, and direct sunlight.
Prolonged high temperatures may cause the adhesive to melt over time.
When exposed to moisture/water, pinecones will close up. They will however open back up again once they are dry, however not necessarily in the same shape as previously.
